WANTED: 2 BRINDLES CONNECTED WITH A JAILBREAK!!!

These 2 hounds are wanted in connection with an escape from kitchen confinement on Saturday evening. The details are sketchy, however it is believed that Mesa (the suspect on the right) was put in kitchen confinement for a trial run as an alternative to his kennel. His caring and thoughtful owners believed that the kitchen would be a more comfortable and pleasant experience for him while he was left alone for the first time since his surgery. He was secured in the kitchen by not one, but two child guard gates.

Upon return from a much needed run to the grocery store, the before mentioned caring and thoughtful owners, were surprised to find a freed Mesa and two busted down gates. Witnesses on the scene gave conflicting stories of the actual breakout, but all paws pointed to the same houndy as the accomplice - Truman (pictured above left).

Some of the aliases that these suspects go by include: The Big and The Little, Big Dooda, Big Pen, Chief Little Ear, Hounce de la Founce, Choo-Choo, Trunami, Mesa Face-a and Tru Tru.

Be advised that these suspects are not dangerous, however, they are always very hungry, so caution is advised when approaching these hounds unless you have greenies or tater tots readily available.

It is also believed that a grey and white kitten, known as Diego, DD or the devil, may be somehow involved in this unbelievable crime.

Nancy Grace is the lead reporter on this story and will have an update when more details become available.

OFFICIALLY 1 WEEK POST - OP!!!

Mesa loves the new Monkey that Aunt Dawn brought over last night. He's had so many visitors...what a lucky, popular guy!

Today has been more of the same. He's pretty bored in the mornings. We have been tapering his pain meds, so part of it could be discomfort. It's hard to keep him from pacing from room to room and wanting to go outside. We broke open the bones we had on reserve for days like this. Seemed to work well - it entertained him for awhile and then he took a nice long nap.

He is still pretty sneaky with his incision. He's scheduled to get his staples out on Saturday, so we are doing our best to not mess that up!! Enter the e-collar aka "the cone." Not Mesa's favorite!! He does however enjoy swinging his head around and clearing off the coffee table as he walks by.

Look at that face!!
Keep sending Mesa your good wishes for a speedy recovery.

DAY 6: HAPPY BIRTHDAY MESA!!

Today is recovery day 6. It is also Mesa's 9th birthday! He looks thrilled, doesn't he? He seems to be feeling pretty good. He still struggles with getting comfy. He'll rest in one spot for awhile, then move to another, then another. Truman has been taking his fair share of time on the nice, big ortho bed.

Mesa has a small spot on his outside incision that looks a little red today. Looks like he might have licked it a little when I wasn't looking. Definitely something we will be keeping a close eye on. Or perhaps he will just have to wear his comfy cone more often....yuck!!

I'm heading back to work tomorrow....the original plan was to barricade Mesa in the kitchen so he couldn't get around much and so Truman won't be able to get to his incision or risk the chance of him knocking Mesa down. BUT, there is a new plan!!! Gpa & Gma to the rescue!! Gpa is coming over in the morning, Gma in the afternoon. What a huge relief to have someone with Mesa. I know he will be much happier too. Hopefully he and Tru Tru behave....

Mesa is staring at me right now....I think he is demanding his birthday present!

RECOVERY DAY 4

Welcome home Big Dog!!!! Mesa got home from MU on Saturday. He was SOOO happy to see us and to get home! His knee seems to be feeling better already. His incisions look really good. The entire MU vet school was great to work with. Dr. Cook was great. Mesa's vet student, Kayla, was great too. She called everyday with updates and endured two days of his whining!!

Can you believe the shaved drumstick??!!

Truman has been spending the last few days with cousin Oscar. It's been nice to give Mesa a chance to get settled in. Tru Tru will probably come home tomorrow. Mesa's biggest obstacle is going to be resting. So far, he's doing ok, but he's bored already. He's napping a lot (how is that different from his "normal" life??) but having trouble staying comfortable. He's also having to wear the e-collar quite a bit because he keeps licking his incision and I am NOT going to let that thing get infected!

Thanks to everyone who has been calling, texting and stopping by. Mesa's got lots of great people that care about him. We appreciate all of it!!!

Off to bed for now. More to report tomorrow!

We went to Columbia today to meet Dr. Cook (Mesa's orthopedic surgeon) and solidify our plan of attack for Mesa's knee. He will have surgery tomorrow morning - the "tightrope" procedure - to repair his torn cruciate ligament in his right leg. We will head back to MU on Saturday to bring him home.

Dr. Cook was really nice (just like Dr. Beachner said!!). He gave us lots of good info and made me feel more comfortable with the surgery. We left Mesa in very caring and capable hands....but it was still really hard to go!!!

The next few days will be spent preparing the house for Mesa's return. We have an awesome home-made ramp to cover the steps to get Mesa outside (thanks Gpa Don!!) He will have to be confined to a pretty small area, so we are planning to convert the kitchen into a "recovery room." The shopping list will include: rugs to cover all of the hardwood floors, a new dog bed, bones and chew toys to keep The Big busy, lots and lots of pill pockets and an e-collar (cone!). The recovery period is at least 8 weeks, so we have a long road ahead of us!
